Deck Preparation
GRP requires a structurally sound and dry deck. We assess deck condition as part of every GRP survey — any rot, softness or structural movement is identified and included in the quote. Installing GRP over a compromised deck is a waste of the system cost; the deck will continue to deteriorate beneath the membrane and will require replacement within a few years regardless of the GRP condition above it.
The GRP Lamination Process
A layer of fibreglass matting is laid over the prepared deck and saturated with catalysed resin. This bonds to form a seamless, fully waterproof membrane with no joints — the primary failure mechanism of all felt systems is eliminated. A topcoat of coloured gelcoat is applied as the final layer, providing UV protection and the finished appearance. The complete laminate is typically 3 to 4mm thick.
Upstands and Detailing
GRP's seamless nature is most valuable at the details — upstands, abutments and penetrations that are the primary water entry points on felt systems.
