Nail Sickness

The corrosion and failure of the nails holding roof tiles or slates, leaving sound tiles to slip off the roof. It is endemic on Portsmouth's post-war estates such as Paulsgrove and Leigh Park, where galvanised fixings from the 1950s to 1970s have reached end of life in coastal-adjacent salt air. Re-fixing with marine-grade stainless nails is the standard remedy.

Lead Code

A numbering system indicating the thickness of sheet lead used for flashings and valleys, from code 3 (thinnest) to code 8. GRP Fibreglass

Glass-reinforced plastic, a seamless liquid-applied flat roofing membrane cured in place to form a single joint-free waterproof layer. It is the best-performing flat roof system for Portsmouth's coast, lasting 22 to 28 years against 10 to 15 for felt, and resisting the salt, UV and ponding that degrade cheaper systems on exposed south coast positions.

EPDM

A synthetic rubber single-ply membrane used for flat roofs, supplied in large sheets that minimise joints. In Portsmouth's coastal conditions EPDM lasts 20 to 25 years and is the preferred choice for larger flat roof areas where GRP becomes costly. Its bonding adhesive should be checked every five to seven years on exposed positions.

Pointing

The mortar finish between bricks or at the junction of a chimney and roof. On Portsmouth's Victorian properties, pointing must use lime mortar rather than hard cement — cement is harder than the soft Victorian brick and causes the brick face to spall as the two expand and contract differently in coastal conditions.

Soft-Wash Biocide

A low-pressure roof cleaning method using a chemical biocide that kills moss, algae and lichen at root level over several weeks, without the tile damage caused by pressure washing. It is the correct approach for Portsmouth roofs, where coastal humidity drives rapid regrowth and pressure washing would strip protective tile surfaces.

Marine-Grade Fixings

Austenitic stainless steel nails and clips specified for roofs in coastal environments, effectively immune to the salt corrosion that destroys standard galvanised fixings. British Standard BS 5534 requires them within three kilometres of the sea — covering virtually all of Portsmouth — where they extend roof life by 20 to 30 years over galvanised alternatives.

Nail-Sick Re-Fix

A roof repair that strips the covering, discards the corroded nails, and re-fixes the existing sound tiles with new marine-grade stainless nails.
